The UC College-Conservatory of Music's Division of Music Education and the Ohio Collegiate Music Education Association present a free workshop with electric violinist Tracy Silverman beginning at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

Silverman will work with CCM students throughout the day on Oct. 16, discussing his career and providing master classes. His residency will culminate with a strum bowing and improvisation workshop, which is open to teachers and college students from throughout the Tristate area.

Strum bowing is a method developed by Silverman to teach string students how to groove. Strum bowing is for all ages and abilities, from elementary school beginners to conservatory pre-professionals. Silverman will discuss effective ways to apply and reinforce the concepts of strum bowing and to practice techniques like ghosting, chopping, subdividing and developing the 3-D strum.

This workshop is free, but registration is required. RSVP online using the link below. Participants are encouraged to bring their instruments!

Redefining the role of the violin in contemporary music, Tracy Silverman has contributed significantly to the repertoire and development of the six-string electric violin and to progressive string playing. "String playing must reflect our popular musical culture or risk becoming old-fashioned and irrelevant," says Silverman.

Lauded by BBC Radio as "the greatest living exponent of the electric violin," Silverman’s groundbreaking work with the six-string electric violin defies musical boundaries. Formerly first violinist with the innovative Turtle Island String Quartet, Silverman was named one of 100 distinguished alumni by the Juilliard School. He made his professional debut as soloist with the Chicago Symphony at the age of 13.

A long-standing advocate for music education, Silverman’s instructional book, The Strum Bowing Method: How to Groove on Strings, is a seminal treatise on the subject of post-classical string technique. He is an in-demand clinician and on the string faculty at Belmont University in Nashville, TN.

About CCM Music Education

CCM's Division of Music Education offers a Bachelor of Music (BM) in Music Education, along with both a traditional two year Master of Music in Music Education (MM) degree and a three-summer Master of Music Education (MME) practice-oriented degree.

Drawing upon widely varied institutional and community resources, these programs integrate the high quality of music training and experience available in a conservatory environment with a strong program of pedagogical preparation.

Each year, CCM's Music Education program serves 80-90 students in residence in its undergraduate and graduate programs. Graduates of these programs enjoy a 100% placement rate, most often as school music teachers, community arts personnel, church musicians, faculty members at colleges and universities, and students in advanced programs of study.
