Fifth Third Arena has re-opened for the 2018-19 basketball season. The privately-funded renovation of Fifth Third Arena includes:

Two 360-degree concourses and permanent lower level bowl with new padded chair-back seating and cup holders throughout most of the arena
Premium seating options, including 542 new club seats with access to the Champions Club, Loge Box Seating, and 16 luxury suites
New hospitality areas, including the 400-level and 500-level bars, which are available to all fans and the addition of three exclusive clubs –the Arena Club, the Champions Club, and the Courtside Club
New upper-level concourse with its own fan amenities, including new restrooms, concessions, and a specialty drink bar
New HD scoreboard, ribbon boards, sound system and LED lighting to enhance the game atmosphere
Open entrance plaza with centralized ticketing and guest services along with the new FanFirst Center
New restrooms and concessions
Renovation of building facade and outdoor HD videoboard

The arena opened in 1989 and is located on the campus of the University of Cincinnati. It primarily serves as the home venue for the Cincinnati Bearcats men's basketball, women's basketball, and women's volleyball teams and hosts other events. It is located in the Myrl H. Shoemaker Center, which was also the name of the arena until 2005, when it was named for Cincinnati-based Fifth Third Bank. It is still popularly known as "The Shoe".

Oscar Palmer Robertson, nicknamed "The Big O", played at the University of Cincinnati (1957–1960). In each of his three years, he won the national scoring title, was named an All-American, and was chosen College Player of the Year, while setting 14 NCAA and 19 school records.

Oscar Robertson exemplified the Boldly Bearcat spirit throughout his playing career. He led the Bearcats to a 79–9 overall record during his three varsity seasons, including two Final Four appearances.

He continues to stand atop the Bearcats' record book. The many records he still holds include: points in one game, 62 (one of his six games of 50 points or more); career triple-doubles, 10; career rebounds per game, 15.2; and career points, 2,973.
